Instructor Mentoring Scheme
As a result of increasing enquiries over the past few years I am offering some quality training/mentoring in Bushcraft and related skills.
This is an opportunity to take your basic competence and develop more thorough understanding of the key subjects accredited by the Open College at level 3.
The offer will be available primarily to professionals in the outdoors who have a history of using woodland based skills such as Forest School leaders, Traditional Craft workers or Outdoor Instructors who lead basic survival/wilderness skills type programmes.
Potential clients will have attended WSC’s Bushcraft for Practitioners course, hold the IOL’s Foundational Bushcraft Competency Certificate or are able to prove their basic competence satisfactorily.
A discussion will follow to ensure that the course will suit you and that you will suit the course.
From there you will be invited to attend the training days which typically will be done in two day blocks during weekday periods. These will provide input into the main subject matter and give you enough resources to then take home and continue through the course criteria in your own time. It is envisaged that 8-12 days will be made available for which you are likely to need to attend 6-8.
The Level 3 units initially covered are:
Fire and Fire Management
This includes a detailed look at a wide range of fire lighting methods including competence of at least two methods of Friction Fire. Safety as well as the legalities when using fire is all very much part of this unit.
Shelters and Bedding
A thorough look at different designs and materials that can be used to create effective weatherproofing and insulation along with a clear understanding of safety factors.
Cordage Construction
Looking at a wide range of different materials that be made into lengths of cord for a number of different tasks. An understanding of strength and durability will link into such tasks as Bow Drill fire giving you a high level of competence in both of these skills.
Other units that are likely to be incorporated into the syllabus are Countryside Food; and Water Sources and Preparation.
Opportunities will be made (subject to your suitability) for you to come and observe, assist, co-lead and finally lead sessions with a variety of clients to suit you. This will provide you with valuable experience and will enable you to keep a flexible approach when using Bushcraft skills.
Throughout the scheme you will also have regular contact with me to ensure that you and your skills are developing. There will be various additional opportunities available to you e.g. If you require some extra short bits of time with me in the woods I will try to make these available.
Projects of various sorts are often happening especially over the winter which may give you further clarity of skills.
