Why did you create Woodland Survival Crafts?

“During my time as a chief instructor at the Pioneer Centre in Shropshire I realised that, although more conventional outdoor pursuits have a very positive effect on people, my passion for bushcraft has the natural potential to make a much greater impact.

Woodland Survival Crafts has been going since 1995, and I can honestly say that the success I have had, particularly by inspiring young people, has vindicated my decision.” - Dave Watson

What makes Woodland Survival Crafts different from other outdoor survival schools?

Dave Watson has spent all his adult life as an instructor/ trainer and has an outstanding reputation for his depth of knowledge and ability to explain appropriately to anyone of any age. Consequently he trains his team to a very high standard and only picks people who are clearly talented instructors.

Not surprisingly it is Woodland Survival Crafts that has instigated, along with the Open College Network East Midlands Region, one of the only recognised certificates on this inspiring subject.

Which course should I attend first?

If you are not sure whether bushcraft is for you, then why not come on one of the Introductory Bushcraft courses. Otherwise, the Woodland Survival Skills (Bushcraft) course not only gives you a good grounding in the basics of bushcraft, but could end up gaining you one of the only recognised certificates available.

Who teaches the courses?

Most of the courses are run by Dave himself, but, as of Spring 2005, Ian Cresswell from Belper will be regularly running some of the basic courses and helping demonstrate bushcraft skills at shows. Richard Hattersley-Smith of Adventure Outreach also occasionally runs some of the young peoples programmes. Find out more about our instructors.

How many students are typically enrolled in each course?

Although course places vary, most have a maximum of 10 to 12 people enrolled on them.

What type of person attends?

More or less anyone of any age attends our courses. We get the retired, the high flying business people, mothers, families. In fact, the only type of person we get very few of is the macho survivalist.

Can I bring my children?

Most courses are geared towards adults (16 years and over). However, we do sometimes allow younger children at a reduced rate. There are of course Family Bushcraft weekends which are designed especially for 8 year-olds and over. However, once again, we will allow younger children on that course as well.

Will I be far away from my car?

No. Cars are parked close by so you wont have to carry all your equipment in one go.

What type of gear do I need to bring?

Please see the recommended kit list. Please also take note of any special kit requirements for your specific course. If you have any questions about kit that are not answered on this site, then please don't hesitate to contact us.

I haven’t got a good knife. Does it matter?

Don’t worry, whatever course you are on you will be able to get by without a knife. Please don’t buy a knife unless you are sure that it will be a good one to have. Woodland Survival Crafts usually have some knives for sale.

Will Woodland Survival Crafts provide food?

On some courses, like the 5 day OCNEMR and the wild food courses, food is provided. For others bring food which can be cooked over a campfire. For suggestions please contact Dave and he will advise you.

Will I have to eat insects?

No. We focus almost entirely on the kind of wild foods that can be bought in the shops.

Are Woodland Survival Crafts’ courses safe?

Woodland Survival Crafts has an outstanding record of safety which is partly down to its thorough training of its staff as well as great attention to detail. Wherever tools are used, training is given. Woodland Survival Crafts regularly considers potential risks. The courses are of an adventurous nature so please accept that bumps, minor cuts and minor burns are clearly possible. Please see our booking conditions for further guidance.

Where is Spring Wood, and how do I get there?

Woodland Survival Crafts is based at Spring Wood which is quite literally on the Leicestershire/ Derbyshire border, south of the town of Melbourne. A map will be sent along with course details on confirmation of booking. We are about 12 minutes away from East Midlands Airport and can arrange transport to and from there on request. Take a look at our How to Find Us page for more details.
