Croatian Forest Crafts: 4 June – 11 June- 2018
Join us on a partnership course between Woodland Ways and Woodland Survival Crafts, set in the stunning mountainous forest surrounds of Risjnak National Park- Croatia. 6000 hectares of pristine forest made up of fir, spruce and beech will warmly greet you as we immerse ourselves into some tradition forest crafts.
Both Jason Ingamells (Woodland Ways) and Dave Watson (Woodland Survival Crafts) are well known for there high quality instruction, here they will introduce you to some local Master Craftsmen to further your knowledge.
Our First stop will be with Anton Stimac who is a recognized Master by the Croatian Ministry of Culture for the art of making fine roof shingles called Sindra. This method of cladding houses from the forest has been taking place for 200 years in the region, with the skill being passed from Antons father to him, and then on to his son and grandson. This fascinating technique of splitting thin sheets from solid trunks of fir requires a keen eye and adept tool working, all of which you will be guided through. The results of your labor will then be used to repair an old interpretive structure within the National Park.
Bark work and its uses from shelter to crafts will also be introduced as we work with the Park Ranger Service learning.
Continuing with the forest theme you will also be given the opportunity to work alongside Marijan, a world renoun relief carver, also recognized as a Master Craftsman. The stunning detail of his forest carved scenes are truly inspirational and under his expert tuition you will be guided to create your own work of woodland relief art- merging Lime boards with hand carving tools you will feel a part of the forest culture rather than just a visitor to it.
A couple of evenings will also be spent with Rudi Pintar, a true woodsman and genuine life and soul of the forest as he guides you through the stages of pyrography to create another piece of woodland art to bring home. You will be taken through all stages from preparing the timber through to the techniques of burning your own woodland inspired designs.
Outside of these structured times you will also be given the opportunity to spend time with Dave and Jason as they share the hidden world of the forest, from the delicate traces left behind from the forests inhabitants to the flora and connection between the two. You may decide to spend an evening sitting out watching for the local population of European Brown Bear, or learning more about deer on the almost guaranteed daily sightings.
Accommodation is based in comfortable shared rooms (single rooms available at extra cost) within local family homes to truly immerse yourself into the small mountain community. Your food will be traditional home cooked Croatian dishes.
